Eclipsys CPOE Solutions Lead Industry in Physician Adoption for Seventh-Consecutive Year

For the seventh-straight year, the annual KLAS CPOE Digest has shown that Eclipsys' computerized provider order entry (CPOE) solutions are used by more physicians in more hospitals than any other vendor's systems. Eclipsys continues to lead the industry in total physicians live on CPOE solutions and percentage of its client base using the solution.

According to the KLAS CPOE Digest 2009: Meaningful Use and Physician Adoption report, Eclipsys leads the industry in CPOE solution adoption. In the U.S., one in four medical orders placed daily by clinicians is performed using an Eclipsys healthcare IT solution.

The solution’s high adoption rates and speed are based on embedded complex algorithms that transcend fundamental order entry to automatically interpret and recalculate new order protocols in real time based on any updates to the patient condition.

The recent American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) legislation is changing the way healthcare providers look at CPOE solutions. KLAS believes this will accelerate movement to CPOE, as only 12.5 percent of U.S. hospitals are live with CPOE solutions.

With nearly 40 years of experience, Eclipsys has leveraged the input of thousands of physicians for evidence-based order sets and frequently used protocols to achieve unmatched, continuous evolution in its CPOE solution capabilities. The result is an intuitive, easy-to-adopt solution with highly complex clinical analytics and decision support capabilities that will provide workflows tailored to how healthcare organizations’ physicians practice medicine, and support fully automating even the most complex order sets and medication ordering. Eclipsys solutions include the exacting protocols, long-range medication schedules and complicated treatment plans commonplace in oncology and pediatric care environments.

Eclipsys Sunrise Acute Care™ system achieved the highest overall combined ratings among CPOE solutions when measuring the following: physician satisfaction with CPOE, comparison of time to order, system response time and system reliability and uptime. In this report, Eclipsys led in the following categories:

  • Percent of client base live on CPOE (61 percent)
  • Physician satisfaction
  • Fastest time to order
  • Oncology ordering
  • Alerting capabilities
  • Ease of use (tied)

After surveying Eclipsys clients using its CPOE solutions, KLAS found that:

  • 92 percent of the clients would recommend the solution to a friend or peer
  • 92 percent of the clients would buy the solution again
  • 95 percent of clients reported they ranked Eclipsys CPOE as "the best" or "one of the best." KLAS also recognized that Sunrise Pharmacy™ [link to Home>Hospitals>Pharmacy] has reached maturity with over 20 live sites.

The survey is performed each year by KLAS Enterprises, LLC, [link to www.klasresearch.com] an independent research and consulting firm specializing in monitoring and reporting the performance of healthcare information technology vendors and healthcare professional services firms. The study provides detailed information on several criteria including current CPOE solutions usage at healthcare organizations, product capabilities and vendor performance and compiles data from healthcare executives, managers and clinicians. The CPOE Digest examines all of the known CPOE sites in North America.
